- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Examine trees for rodent damage. Protect plants from road and sidewalk salt. Order new plants now for the best selection.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Determine what you want to grow and choose your seeds. Sketch your garden plan.
- Home (indoor plants): Avoid overwatering plants since they usually require less water in the winter. Place near sunlight but away from drafty, cold windowpanes.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Force early spring plants into bloom while indoors. Check all winter plant protections to ensure they are still in place. Prune landscape plants aside from early spring bloomers.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Sketch your garden layout and prepare tools for the upcoming season. Prepare seed starters indoors for transplanting. Test germination using leftover seeds.

- Home (indoor plants): After frost risk has passed, move indoor plants to shady locations outside and maintain proper moisture levels in the soil.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Prune early spring trees and shrubs once flowering blooms have faded. Remove bagworms from trees and apply fungicides to roses.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Warm-season flowers and vegetables are frost-tender, so hold off on planting until frost danger has passed.
- Home (indoor plants): Increase watering and fertilizing of indoor plants. Cut flowers for added beauty indoors.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Prune spring-flowering shrubs once blooms have faded. Water freshly planted shrubs and trees. Mow grass regularly but keep length high.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Add mulch to prevent weeds and control them while they are still sprouting. Remove cool-season plants, which become bitter in the heat.
- Home (indoor plants): Make sure outdoor plants stay hydrated since they can dry out quickly in the heat. Propagate houseplants.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Add mulch near young plants to conserve moisture. Avoid planting bare-root stock. Avoid hurting tree trunks when lawnmowing.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Fertilize strawberries and harvest raspberries when they are fully colored. Remove dying blossoms from perennial and annual flowers. Lift spring-flowering bulbs for propagation or transplanting.
- Home (indoor plants): Now’s the time to order spring-flowering bulbs to plant in the fall. Reroot cuttings from annual garden plants in potting soil, peat and other media instead of water.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Hard prune and remove bagworms. Avoid fertilizing woody plants.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Direct-seed fall vegetables and thin seedlings to their necessary spacing. Keep the soil of the garden watered during dry periods.
- Home (indoor plants): Prepare storage to keep tender flower bulbs safe over winter. Repot herbs to grow indoors. Bring houseplants back indoors if necessary.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Harvest fall fruits, including apples, grapes and pears. Clean up fallen leaves, twigs and fruits near trees.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Protect crops from frost using newspaper, blankets and other materials that aren’t plastic. Plant spring-flowering bulbs later in the month.
- Home (indoor plants): Force spring-flowering bulbs to bloom by potting indoors. Houseplants will drop leaves due to decreased natural light indoors. Water less frequently and stop fertilization.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Rake leaves to prevent them from matting grass. Keep newly planted stock watered until ground freezes.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Harvest gourds, root crops, pumpkins and brussel sprouts. Test soil for fertilizer as needed and finish planting spring-flowering bulbs.
- Home (indoor plants): Move plants under natural or artificial light if they drop many leaves. Apply less fertilizer and water. Pot spring-flowering bulbs indoors and keep tips exposed.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Remove dead branches. Add repellent and mulch to deter feeding damage from rodents. Clean up fallen fruits and leaves.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Continue harvesting if frost hasn’t affected your garden. Till soil to promote faster drying and warming in the spring, except in areas prone to erosion.
- Home (indoor plants): Examine houseplants for dry edges and run a humidifier if necessary. Avoid placing plants against cold windowpanes. Check Christmas trees for a sticky trunk and flexible, green needles before purchasing.
- Yard (lawns, fruits and woody ornamentals): Protect shrubs from snow by tying stems together. Wrap trunks of thin-barked trees.
- Garden (flowers, vegetables and small fruits): Protect newly planted bulbs and perennials with organic material after the plants fall dormant. Check stored produce for decay.
