How to Liven Up Your Winter Landscape

How to Liven Up Your Winter Landscape

Here in Northwest Indiana, we often imagine snowy, dreary days when we think about winter. It’s true that winter is less colorful than its warmer season counterparts: as a result, it’s easy for your yard to look bland or boring this time of the year. Yet with a little bit of effort, winter holds its own unique beauty. You can create an eye-catching landscape that brings out your property’s best features, even when it’s chilly out. Here are some tips provided by our professionals at Redbud Landscape that you can use to liven up your winter landscape.

Plant Vegetation With Distinctive Bark

Deciduous trees become bare when the cold weather rolls around, which makes their branches and trunks highly visible—however, this can be a good thing. Ornamental trees with striking bark can add visual interest. These shrubs and trees tend to be smaller, so it’s easier to find places to plant them in the landscape. Consider birch trees and dogwood shrubs for maximum texture and color all winter long.

Plants With Berries Add Color

There are many kinds of trees and shrubs that grow berries that remain on their branches throughout the colder months. These offer food for birds that stay in the area during winter, and they make beautiful additions to the winter landscape. Try planting holly bushes or crabapple trees for added color and visual interest to offset the snow.

Consider the Benefits of Evergreens

Evergreens have so much to offer to any winter landscape. They add color, and not just green: consider the Gold Threat false cypress for yellow tones, or the dwarf blue spruce if you want to bring out a cooler palette. These evergreens are key for winter landscaping but also look beautiful in every season. Whenever you plant a new bed, be sure to add at least one evergreen tree as an interesting focal point.

Play Up Your Hardscape

In addition to softscape features, be sure to make the most of your hardscape. Winter is an opportunity to reassess your landscape design and decide where you can add focal points. For some, the best decision may be to avoid planting anything at all. Instead, consider adding hardscape features, such as an arbor, garden bench or a trellis for structure. These features can make a huge difference in your yard’s comfort.

Fill Summertime Containers

From hanging baskets to window boxes, many different containers are perfect for a winter landscape. Various broadleaf evergreen shrubs and spruce work well in the winter, although they should be watered regularly when the weather becomes dry. You can also fill containers with colorful evergreen boughs if you’d rather avoid live plants.
