The Disadvantages of Overwatering Your Lawn

The Disadvantages of Overwatering Your Lawn

With summer on its way, it can be tempting to really soak your lawn in hopes of preventing it from going dormant in the heat. However, this is usually not a good idea. In fact, overwatering your lawn can come with just as many dangers for it as underwatering. To keep your grass healthy and green, it’s important to understand just how much water it needs throughout the year. Contacting a professional landscaping company can also be a great way to keep up with outdoor maintenance in any season.

Risks of Overwatering Grass

While it might seem harmless on the surface, overwatering your lawn risks damage to your grass from multiple sources. Not only can overwatering eat up your water bill, but it will make your grass more susceptible to disease and insect damage. These issues can lead to unsightly brown patches in the yard you are trying to maintain.

Additionally, overwatering your lawn actually makes it less resistant to future heat and drought. When grass is properly cared for, it will continue to grow its roots deeper into the soil, searching for more water and developing a system that will make it more resilient going forward. Knowing the signs of an overwatered lawn will help keep your grass healthy and looking its best.

Signs of an Overwatered Lawn

The amount of watering your grass will need ultimately depends on the weather. Keeping conditions in mind before operating a sprinkler or irrigation system will help maintain your grass. However, if you fear that the amount of water you are giving your lawn is still too much, there are some signs you can watch out for. A few examples include:

  • Puddles and runoff
  • Weed and mushroom growth
  • Yellowing
  • Root rot

Other Sources of Lawn Damage

Treating a lawn is best done by understanding what is causing the damage in the first place. Overwatering your lawn can lead to a lot of problems, but it certainly isn’t the only issue that can be behind instances of yellowing or dead patches. Drought is the next obvious culprit, but insects like grubs and soil compaction can also be to blame. If you have a dog, their urine can also be causing the grass to die, and you may need to make it a point to rinse the places your pup likes to visit most.
